Ansco Panda 20

LINKS

It doesn't get much simpler than this. I like to think of my Ansco Panda 20 camera as a Holga predecessor. However, unlike the Holga, the Panda 20 doesn't have multiple apertures, shutter speeds, flash contacts, or a focusable lens.

Nope, all you get here is the most basic of TLR style box cameras. Features include:

  • Brilliant waist level viewfinder
  • Fixed focus lens
  • Single self-cocking shutter (no time or bulb provision)
  • Nifty built-in faux-shoelace neckstrap
  • Takes 620 film

Obviously Ansco introduced the plastic Panda in the 1950s to compete with some of Kodak's cheaper Brownie models such as the Baby Brownie or the Brownie Holiday. A good friend and fellow camera collector brought one of these out with us one day last summer when we were shooting some of our vintage cameras and I was so taken by the simple design and small size that I just had to acquire one for myself. I have such a soft spot in my heart for neglected 620 cameras!

I'm afraid I can't provide any more technical details than I have above. However, I hope to post a sample photo or two in the near future.
