IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS FOR USING THE BUILT-IN FLASH
When using the flash unit, the specific cautionary notices in this owner's manual should always be observed and complied with, as well as basic precautions, including the following:
1. Read and understand all instructions.
2. Do not operate the flash unit if the camera has been dropped or damaged - - until it has been examined by an authorized Minolta service facility.
3. To protect against electrical shock hazards, do not immerse camera and/or flash unit in water or other liquids.
4. To avoid electric shock hazards, do not disassemble the unit, but take it to an authorized Minolta service facility when service or repair work is required. Incorrect reassembly can cause electric shock hazard when the unit is used subsequently.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
Your Minolta Pocket Autopak 450E or 430E with its tiny built-in electronic flash is one of the most convenient and easiest-to-use cameras available. No 110 cartridges make film handling effortless, and setting film speed is unnecessary. A genuine coated all-glass Rokkor lens has simple, handy zone focusing. The camera tells you when to adjust exposure or pop out the flash if there is not enough light. Beside these main features, the 450E model offers a faster lens, a flashmatic system that automatically adjusts lens aperture with distance focused, and unusual handy close-up capability.
For best results and longest service, please read this manual carefully all the way throughand follow the simple instructions. Then keep it for reference later as needed.
NOTES ON THIS MANUAL
As this is a combined instruction manual for use with the Pocket Autopak 430E and 450E, some sections may not apply to your model and some illustrations may show features different from the camera you own. Proper operation is indicated for both models, however, and differences between them are clearly indicated throughout.
Unless otherwise mentioned, illustrations show the Pocket Autopak 450E, the model with the full complement of features, with appropriate notes to adapt them for use with the model 430E.
NAMES OF PARTS

FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS TO USE YOUR POCKET AUTOPAK
1. After inserting and checking battery, insert film cartridge and latch back cover.
2. Operate film advance repeatedly until first exposure locks in place and advance will not move.
3. Slide lens cover open and set focus for your subject.
4. Look through eyepiece and compose subject in viewfinder. Depress shutter release slightly; if red lamp in finder lights at sun symbol on 450E, slide control left to cloud symbol, If it lights at sun symbol on 430E or cloud symbol on 450E, slide control left to flash symbol to pop out strobe. Then take picture within flash range when lamp begins to pulsate. Always squeeze shutter release smoothly.
NEVER FORCE ANY PART OF CAMERA; CONTINUE READING FOR DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS:
INSTALLING BATTERY
Your camera's built-in strobe and exposure warning system are powered by one 1.5v AA-size (pen-light).
To install this:
1. Open the battery-chamber cover by sliding it down and lifting it.
2. Insert a battery as specified with the plus end out as indicated inside the chamber, then close and latch the cover.
CHECKING THE BATTERY
The battery should be checked immediately after inserting and from time to time thereafter, especially before starting on trips or taking especially important pictures.
To do this:
1. Slide the lens cover open.
2. Covering the sensor with your finger (being careful not to leave finger print on the glass), depress the shutter release slightly. If the red signal in the finder lights, the battery is serviceable. If not, the battery should be replaced.
NOTE
* To avoid the possibility of excessive battery drain from the finder lamp, keep the lens cover closed when not taking pictures.
* For taking pictures without battery, see the note (below)
LOADING AND ADVANCING FILM
1. Slide the latch toward the finder eyepiece and open the back cover.
2. Insert the film cartridge into the camera
3. Latch the cover shut.
4. Use your right thumb to operate the film advance repeatedly until it locks (about 3 strokes). A series of 1's should be visible in the film-data window to indicate the first exposure.
NOTE
* The shutter release cannot be depressed unless the film advance has been operated until it locks.
* Your camera is designed to use films with speed ratings from 80 to 400 ASA in normal daylight conditions. However, use of high speed films under extremely bright conditions such as beach or snow scenes is not recommended.
CAMERA CORD
A handy cord is furnished with your Pocket Autopak. Attached to the cord eyelt on the camera, this provides carrying convenience and safety. It can, for example, be placed around your neck to keep the camera handy or to prevent its falling from a shirt pocket. Be careful to keep the cord behind the front of the camera when taking pictures.
This cord also has an important use in taking close-ups with the Pocket Autopak 450E. For details, see (below)
LENS-COVER SLIDE
When this built-in sliding cover is closed, it protects the lens-cover glass, locks the shutter release, and makes full viewing through the finder impossible.
To open the cover, slide it away from the viewfinder as far as it will go.
The shutter release cannot be depressed unless this slide is completely open.
NOTE
Keep the lens cover closed when the camera is not in use.
CAUTION
Be careful not to engage the close-up lens when you slide open the lens cover. This will set the camera for close-up operation and it will be impossible to obtain sharp pictures at normal picture taking distance.
FOCUSING
A slide with zone symbols simplifies setting focus with your Pocket Autopak. For sharpest pictures, simply move this slide so that the index points to the symbol for your subject.
A distance-symbol table is located on the bottom of each Pocket Autopak model for ready reference.
Pocket Autopak 450E
With the Pocket Autopak 450E, set the pointer to the mountain symbol farthest left for scenics and other pictures at distances of about 5.5m (18 ft.) or more from the camera at the cloud symbol; 3.5m (11 ft.) or more at the sun symbol.

The framed symbol marks the setting at which most snapshots are taken (about 3.5m or 11 ft.( and has a click stop to keep it in position. At this distance, the part of a standing adult from about head to ankles can be seen in the finder bright frame with the camera held horizontally. Subjects from about 3 to 5m (10 to 16 ft.) will be acceptably sharp at the cloud symbol; from about 2 to 11m (7 to 36 ft.) at the sun symbol.

For head-to-hips pictures of people (at 2m or 7 ft.), set the pointer to the dot at the left above.
The symbol at the right focuses the lens for 1.2m (4 ft.), at which you can see from the top of the head to about mid-chest in the finder.

At the symbol that looks like a "C" open at the top, the camera is focused for close head-and-shoulder portraits at 90cm (3 ft.). (This is also the setting to use with the close-up lens as explained (below) for subjects 50cm or 19 inches from the film.)
Depth-of-field table (below) indicates the exact focusing range at each focus-symbol for both models.

Pocket Autopak 430E

With the Pocket Autopak 430E, set the pointer to the left-hand mountain symbol for subjects about 4.5m (15 ft.) or more from the camera.
At the central framed symbol, subjects between about 2.5 and 5m (8 and 16 ft.) from the camera will be in focus. Most "people-picture" snapshots will probably be taken at this click-stop setting.
With the index set at the right hand symbol, the lens is focused for portraits or other subjects at 1.5m (5 ft.) from the camera. At this distance, from the top of the head to the elbows of a standing adult can generally be seen in the finder with the camera held horizontally.
VIEWFINDER

Looking into the eyepiece of your 450E, you will see the bright fram, A, and the focus symbol setting above it. What you can see inside this frame is the approximate subject area at the three farther focus-slide settings. Pictures at the two close settings and with the close-up lens should be framed within the two short parallax-correction marks near the right corners of the frame.
With the model 430E, the approximate subject area can be observed by looking through the viewfinder with your eye centered in the eyepiece.
With both models, if the finder appears black with only a small circular image area visibile in the center, B, the lens-cover slide is closed, and pictures cannot be taken.
The red lamp at the right side of the finder, C, lights for low-light warning. and pulsates to indicated recycling when the unit is used in flash operation.
With the model 450E, appearance of a red flag in the positions shown in D indicates that the close-up lens is in position for use and you should take pictures as expained (above).

TAKING PICTURES (WITH EXISTING LIGHT)
1. Make sure the film is advanced and the lens-cover slide is completely open.
2. Set focus for the proper subject distance.
3. Hold the camera horizontally or vertically in a comfortable way in which it is steadied against your face and will not ove when you take the picture. Both hands and the camera cord should be kept behind the front edge of the camera.
4. Compose your picture within the bright frame with the 450E or in the viewfidner frame with the 430E.
5. When not taking flash pictures, start with the exposure/function control set at the sun symbol.
6. Depress the shutter release slightly. If the red lamp at the right in the finder does not come on, hold the camera steady and continue to squeeze the release all the way down to make the exposure.
With the 450E, if the red lamp at the right in the finder comes on, move the exposure/function control to the cloud symbol. If the lamp still comes on when the shutter release is depressed slightly, existing light is too low for proper exposure, and you should move the control left to the flash symbol and proceed as explained (in the following section).
With the 430E, if the red lamp at the right in the finder comes on, existing light is insufficient, and you should move the control to the left for flash pictures as explained (in the following section).
NOTE
If the battery is unserviceable or completely lacking, the red lamp in the finder will not come on and the built-in strobe will not charge. In this case, however, you can take pictures by setting the exposure/function control to the syn symbol for subjects in bright sun, to the cloud symbol for cloudy-bright conditions.
FLASH PICTURES
1. Slide the exposure/function control to the flash symbol. The built-in electronic flash will pop out from the end of the camera and start charging if a serviceable battery is installed.
2. At the flash symbol, the red lamp at the right in the finder will come on when the shutter is depressed slightly. When this and/or the flash monitor lamp on the back of the camera starts to pulsate, the camera is ready to take flash pictures.
3. Making sure that your subject is within the flash range indicated on the bottom of the camera for the film type in use, set the focus slide for the distance from the camera to subject.
4. Compose your picture in the viewfinder.
5. Hold the camera steady and squeeze the shutter release all the way down to make the flash exposure.
NOTE
* Pushing the flash all the way in turns it off, stores it, and returns the exposure/function control to the cloud symbol on the 450E, the sun symbol on the 430E. Do not attempt to move the control from the flash symbol otherwise. Keep the flash pushed in to save battery power when not using it.
* If a flash exposure is made when the finder/monitor lamp is not pulsating it will probably be underexposed.
* If the finder/monitor lamp does not come on within 30 seconds after the flash is popped out, the battery should be replaced with a new one.
* When taking flash pictures of high-colored subjects at the close up setting (see next section), the flash window should be covered with one or more layers of a white handkerchief or similar material for the better results.
CLOSE-UPS
The Minolta Pocket Autopak 450E has built-in close-range capability for making interesting or useful photos of subjects such as faces, flowers, etc., or copies of posters, books, and so on.
To take close-ups at 50cm (19 in.):
1. Push the close-up lens lug toward the flash as far as it will go; this will position the close-up lens
2. Set the focus slide to the (open-top C) symbol.
3. Hold the camera cord straight out from the front of the camera and make sure that your subject is positioned exactly at the end of it.
4. Frame your close-up in the viewfinder bright frame within the two short marks near its right corners. A red flag will appear at the left in the viewfinder as an indication whenever the close-up lens is in place.
5. Make the exposure in the usual way, being especially careful to avoid camera movements and making sure that the camera-to-subject distance does not change.
NOTE
The shutter release cannot be depressed unless the close-up lens lug is pushed all the way toward the flash (when close-up lens in use) or toward the light sensor (when not in use).

UNLOADING THE CAMERA
After taking the last picture on a cartridge, operate the film advance repeatedly until it locks (about two full strokes), but do not force it any farther. (You may still be able to see backing paper in the window where the exposure numbers appeared.) Then open the back cover and remove the cartridge.
